About the Series

Gaia Temple is hosting a cultural immersion series to explore and learn from the living traditions of the region. We begin with a traditional limpia, followed on Wednesday by a Mayan cooking class, weaving experience, and games with local children.

About the Ceremony

This Tuesday, enter a night of ancestral purification and elemental healing guided by the Tűj, a traditional Mayan fire limpia used to clear heavy energies and restore harmony to body, mind, and spirit.

We gather not only for personal cleansing, but also to open a clear collective field for the projects and visions we are carrying. As part of the DAO Gathering, this ceremony supports each participant in arriving in clarity, so the group can meet in coherence and grounded creative intention.

The ceremony is led by Cheyo, a respected Mayan healer carrying the ancestral practices of his lineage. This is a rare opportunity to attune to the land where we are gathering and participate in a living tradition.

The Experience

This is a full elemental journey. We will alternate between the mountain spring–fed cold pool and the ceremonial fire, allowing the nervous system to unwind, regenerate, and open.

Herbs growing on the land are used in the limpia. This is a sober ceremonial space — the elements and our collective intention are the medicine being shared.

The Tűj Supports

• Personal clearing, clarity & alignment
• Collective clarity & coherence
• Strengthening intuition & energetic boundaries
• Renewing emotional & spiritual vitality
• Grounding into the body and heart
• Reconnection with ancestral guidance

About the Lineage

Casa Awänímä is located in Tzununá, on the shores of Lake Atitlán, within the ancestral territory of the Kaqchikel Maya. This region has been used for ceremony, healing, and community gatherings for generations.

Lake Atitlán sits inside a volcanic caldera formed by the surrounding volcanoes San Pedro, Tolimán, and Atitlán. In Maya cosmology, this landscape reflects the meeting of water, fire, earth, and sky, creating a natural environment for ceremonial work.

The trails around Tzununá follow historic footpaths used by Maya communities to travel between villages for seasonal ceremonies, trade, and cultural exchange. Many paths in use today are continuations of these older routes.

The property is fed by a natural mountain spring, part of a network of underground water channels formed by volcanic rock. These springs are traditionally understood as sources of vitality and cleansing, and are often included in healing practices.

In Maya tradition, the area is associated with the tzunun (hummingbird), reflected in the name Tzununá. The hummingbird is recognized as a messenger and a symbol of focused intention, often connected with ceremonial work involving prayer and offering.

While the concept of “leylines” is not part of Maya language, the region is understood to hold strong energetic currents due to its volcanic geology, mineral-rich water, and alignment with the surrounding mountains. Traditional cosmology expresses this through the three fires: the fire inside the earth (volcano), the fire of the sun and stars, and the fire tended in human ceremony.

The ceremony led by Cheyo is part of a living lineage, passed through direct teaching. The Tűj is a formal practice within Maya healing traditions, involving communication with the spirits of the land, the elements, and ancestral forces, carried out with protocols for offering, prayer, and respect.
