The nervous system is designed to continuously assess safety. It helps us decide whether to engage with others or retreat in isolation. The Polyvagal Theory, developed by Stephen Porges, explains how our autonomic system determines our state:

  • Ventral Vagal State (Connection & Safety): Engaged, socially connected, and relaxed.
  • Sympathetic State (Fight or Flight): Stressed, agitated, or anxious.
  • Dorsal Vagal State (Shutdown & Freeze): Overwhelmed, withdrawn, or depressed.

Exercise: Eye Movement Regulation

  1. Sit comfortably and fix your gaze at a neutral point.
  2. Without moving your head, shift your eyes to the right for 30 seconds.
  3. Return to center, then shift your eyes to the left for 30 seconds.
  4. Observe any bodily changes (e.g., relaxation, deeper breath).

This exercise helps regulate the nervous system and enhance focus.
